Review of Iron Man (2008) by Vance F — 12 Mar 2015
The movie that took our first steps into a much larger universe deserves all the credit.
Iron Man made superhero/comic book movies fun again. Grounded in the real world it draws us in and rewards us with action and laughter.
One can't begin to commend and praise Robert Downey Jr for his portrayal as Tony Stark. We've never seen that combination of swagger, confidence and wit before in our hero. His performance takes the movie to another level and brings in a whole new audience.
As origin stories go this ranks near the top. We're not seeing a man given powers through some strange accident. Rather a man who's driven by conviction and a new purpose; it doesn't hurt that he has seemingly unlimited resources too. Stark's journey to put the suit together still stands as one of the most engaging and grounded original development stories in the superhero world.
When taking an overview of the summer of 2008, which is when the comic-book movie universe was redefined with Iron Man and the Dark Knight. Compared to the dark, brooding crime thriller that is the Dark Knight, Iron Man also shows us that light-hearted, funny superhero movies are just as entertaining and good.
