Review of Iron Man 2 (2010) by Andrew C — 25 Jun 2013
About even with the first one. Not better, not worse.
The dialogue is just outstanding and the performers elevate it to even greater success. Downey is a standout as always, but I have to say that Paltrow, Shandling, Rourke and Rockwell all deliver. Favreau, too, with his 3 or 4 lines.
The only thing holding this movie back from topping the original is that they were trying to do too much. There's just too many character introductions, a decent but ultimately lame subplot about Stark's self-destructive behavior (I would have preferred that to be taken further), action sequences that distract, and another anti-climactic battle at the end between Iron Man, War Machine and an armada of those shitty robot droids from the Star Wars prequels.
I have to say, I don't understand what Rhodey is doing in this movie. He's a total asshole to his friend. No reason for him to fight with Stark and steal his suit. Johansson is miscast, too. Sorry, I don't buy her as a superathletic martial arts master-spy. Emily Blunt was originally cast and would have been superior. Whiplash is completely underutilized, too.
All in all, a fun movie for sure and it lives up to the original, but I was expecting more. The teases for Avengers and Thor have me pumped up for the future of the Marvel movies, though.
