Review of Iron Man 2 (2010) by Anthony K — 15 Jan 2016
First, I'd like to say I do not enjoy superhero movies. X-Men movies were lame. Fantastic Four was corny, didn't bother with the second. Superman bores me. Hellboy put me to sleep. The only superhero movies I enjoy are Burton and Nolan's takes on Batman and, to my surprise, Iron Man.
I loved the first Iron Man film. So needless to say, I was extremely disappointed with this dull, character bloated sequel. The action sequences are few and far between, and even when they do happen, they leave a lot to be desired, especially the don't blink or you'll miss it final battle.
This movie suffers from having far too many characters and takes no time to develop any of the dozen new characters it introduces. Mickey Rourke's character was cool, but really posed little threat, and portrayed a number of Russian stereotypes that I'd expect to see more in some sort of Vin Diesel Mexican Wigger movie than in the sequel to Iron Man.
Sam Rockwell plays the main villain and is probably the lamest criminal mastermind I've ever seen. Dr. Evil is more of a mastermind than this guy. The movie also spends a great deal of time setting up for The Avengers movie coming out in a couple years, which I have no desire to see, so all those scenes did little for me, except make me want to walk out.
They also could have replaced Terrence Howard with someone who actually looks and sounds like him. Don Cheadle felt like a completely new character and not like Roadhes (sp?). This movie really lost sight of what made the first great.
I'm tempted to give it 2 1/2, but with the momentum they had coming into this project, there's no reason for a sequel this bad.
