Review of Iron Man 2 (2010) by Paul W — 04 Jun 2013
Iron Man 2 is no mere sequel, but rather a chapter. The biggest problem with middle chapters in multi-movie planned stories is that they're overburdened is linking themselves to both the past and the future, when the proper function of a movie is to tell it's own story.
This is an excellent superhero movie, when it's telling its own story. The the story is dangerously trite--Tony most overcome his daddy issues to find the means to restore his power and defeat his enemy bent on vengeance--but as usual Downey's acting is up to the tast of fashioning silk purses from any sow's ear.
He's what makes Iron Man special, of course. Come for the explosions, stay for the acting.
