Review of Iron Man 2 (2010) by Barney O — 30 Apr 2017
WHAT I LIKED: Tony Stark's character arc in this film was undoubtedly the right way to go, as it tests the character and places him back in a position where he can develop and become the hero he needs to be. The action and humour that surrounds all that is occasionally appealing too, and Robert Downey Jr and some of his supporting cast add a lot of life to the whole experience.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Sadly - perhaps because it was done in such a rush - the film has no confidence in its underlying story, and ends up masking its foundations with tiresome humour and action. As a result, at its best it's unappealing and boring, and at its worst, it gets dangerously close to turning its serious arcs into a set of poorly written and rather insensitive jokes.
VERDICT: A rushed sequel that masks its great story potential with insensitive humour and fairly dull action; 'Iron Man 2' sadly fails to live up to its well-rounded predecessor.
