Review of Iron Man 2 (2010) by Montique D — 06 Jan 2019
Paramount Pictures join Marvel Entertainment once again to bring us a great sequel to the Iron Man Trilogy. People say that this is the weakest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but I think it is actually pretty good. Jon Favreau directs this great film that doesn't live up to the expectations of its predecessor. The plot: With the world now aware of his identity as Iron Man, Tony Stark must contend with both his declining health and a vengeful mad man with ties to his father's legacy.
Mickey Rourke plays the villain Whiplash. This character needed more character development because about 2 minutes in he started to build a suit, this scene didn't show why he built the suit and why he was mad with Tony? I think it was because someone close to him died at the start. This character deserved more screen time than he got because as this film had two villains (Whiplash and Justin Hammer), the film focused just on Sam Rockwell's (Justin Hammer) character and what he wanted to achieve instead of focusing of Mickey Rourke's character. The change between the cast of Rhodes wasn't a good idea because Terrence Howard was the same height as Robert Downey Jr and they had a lot of chemistry together whereas Don Cheadle does not. This film introduced the most badass and sexist character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Widow who is played by Scarlett Johansson. This character developed over time so we could get to know the character and know how she joined The Avengers Initiative.
There was a shot at the start of film where Tony jumped out of a plane and when it showed him flying, the camera started moving all over the place, so the camera focused more on the sky and building instead of Tony. This shot also made me a bit dizzy. The visual effects were great at times, but the scene near the end were Tony and Rhodes were fighting a bunch of robots in the park, the visual effects were all over the place as it couldn't handle it. As the cinematography was really good in this film, you could actually see what was going on when a action sequence was on screen. This film decided to focus on quite a few subplot about Stark's life e.g. how his suit was killing him and learning about his father's legacy. This film tackled these subplot very well and didn't make the film confusing at all. Nonetheless, Iron Man 2 withholds great characters and A funny script which makes the film entertaining and enjoyable. Iron Man 2 is a great film so I going to give it 82%. Grade B+.
