Review of Iron Man (1951) by Magnus G — 19 Sep 2014
Iron Man is the first in Marvel's current cinematic universe and is a very good introduction both to this and for the character of Tony Stark. It still comes out as its own self-contained superhero origin story rather than a set-up for The Avengers which is a plus and remains one of the strongest in the current cycle of Marvel films.
Robert Downey Jr is immensely likeable as Tony Stark, the arrogant billionaire manufacturer-turned-superhero with a heart of gold and Gwyneth Paltrow plays him off well as Pepper. The special effects also work very well and are kept at a minimal quite well.
The film does fall into the same trap as some origin stories in being bogged down in set up and Jeff Bridges as the villain does feel a bit too tacked on but those are really minor issues as this is still an impressive action film with a lot of heart.
