Review of Iron Eagle (1986) by Steven N — 27 Jan 2009
"Iron Eagle" is the kind of movie that could only be made in the 80's. When a kid's father is shot down, and taken hostage in a faraway fictional land (where everyone speaks perfect english, yet hates Americans), he takes matters into his own hands, hooks up with Louis Gossett Jr.
, steals a jet, and flies in there to rescue him. The music reeks of 80's synthesized "awesomeness." The action is a weird, sort of hilarious, sort of annoying mix of "Top Gun" and something from the Disney Channel, and the acting is sort of like "The Goonies" if all the children were grown men.
The whole thing is a cornucopia of sometimes unintentionally hilarious, mostly eye-rollingly bad uncomfortable weirdness. I can't recommend "Iron Eagle" for anything other than nostalgic purposes.
If it hadn't been available to watch completely free online, and I hadn't been bored beyond belief, I doubt I would have watched it at all. Skip this one.
