Review of Irma Vep (1996) by Nat Z — 16 Jun 2007
Jean-Pierre Leaud (of Antoine Doinel fame) stars as a director attempting to remake Feuillade's classic silent film "Les Vampires". "Irma Vep" is a smart commentary on the current state of the film industry: he obviously doesn't like the way things are going.
At the same time, Assayas pays homage to film history: the great French actors of 1960s and 70s (Leaud and Bulle Ogier), the French cinematheque of the 60s, and the early silent cinema of Feuillade.
