Review of Irma la Douce (1963) by Shane P — 07 Jan 2009
People like to throw around the phrase, "they don't make them like they used to." And, with this film, it's true. They don't make Jack Lemmons like they used to. They don't make Shirley MacLaines like they used to.
They don't make Billy Wilder like they used to. They don't make stories like this like they used to. Provocative without being dirty and sweet without being syrupy, the subtleties in the eyes of Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine are what movie legends are made of.
