Review of Irma la Douce (1963) by Hugo F — 05 Feb 2009
Im sorry to have to say I never caught up with this film as a child. Years of over dissecting and getting criticism mixed up with opinion does take its toll on me I admit. So, I lost some of the flow of this film and it started out with a lot. But I loved the acting and the concept. Shirley MacLaine was a bombshell Peter Pan whose beauty sort of floats above her head like a halo. Lemmon was a master performer passing off as an unsung hero for a time. That said heres the breakdown of the stars:
One star for the colorful Parisian vignette of bloody food markets, art nouveau cafe fronts, rain-soaked cobblestones and all.
One star for the unique conscience character Monsieur Moustache who is neither devil nor angel- more oracle.
One star for Shirley for the most adept handling of endless cigarettes and a lap dog while wearing heels.
One star for Lemmons British Earl accent.
One star for the ultra smooth handling of French prostitution practiced by actors speaking english on a psychedelic supposedly fracophone set.
