Review of Irish Jam (2006) by Kim E — 10 Jun 2006
I can only describe this movie as incredibly odd. A basic "fish out of water" plot is the center of this movie. And like a fish out of water, this movie dies slowly and painfully, with lots of flopping about.
It's completely filled with cliché, almost uncomfortable to watch, stereotypes. Griffin plays a black caricature throughout the movie (including the initial introduction of him as a "oregano-as-pot" dealing, late on all his bills, commitment-phobic, unemployed panhandler).
And the chemistry between him and the Irish heroine is utterly non-existent. They seem more like students assigned to a class project together, trying desperately to make it to the end without incident.
Most of the comedy is based on sight gags and those are few and far between. However, there is some beautiful cinematography of the Irish countryside and lots of traditional Irish music. (But if that's what you're looking for, I suggest you save your money and watch a travel channel special).
I guess the only interesting part was the music video at the end, which features the Irish cast pimped out in hip-hop attire....it's surreal....but not worth the agonizing hours that precede it..
