Review of Iris (2015) by Christine M — 18 Sep 2015
I really wanted to like this movie because who doesn't love a spicy old lady? But its a puff piece of the worst kind. Unfortunately my early marxist training came flooding back. No analysis of where her enormous wealth came from? No insight into the socio-economic implications of the high fashion/design worlds she loves so much.
Unfair haggling of poor third-world vendors but not for big department stores. I wanted to know more about what she really feels and thinks - and of course how she could afford to travel and shop so much in early years and accumulate such store-houses of crap.
Wanted more about her relationships and her family $ background. For an Albert Maysles film, this was a FAIL I wonder why the kid gloves? Why no tension? Why no psychological insight? - why did he keep it so "light"? No history, no economic analysis, no politics? I hope she has more to offer about being human with her 90+ years of life? No tomatoes for me.
