Review of Ira & Abby (2006) by Holly C — 25 May 2008
Though made only in the last year (2007), this trying-to-be-adorable indie film appears dated, like Woody Allen-lite. I mean, who other than overindulgent Manhattanites even gets psychoanalyzed anymore? Anyway, Director Robert Cary has definitely drunk in all the kooky New York stories there are and now spews the characters well-formed onto screen.
The film ends up musing on the institution of marriage in a rather unnecessary way, and also plays out the neuroses of each character. After initially feeling like kicking the whining solipsism out of lead character Ira, one generally gets with the 'romantic' element.
The couples reconcile, cheating husbands return home, and analysts are generously compensated all around.
