Review of Ip Man 3 (2015) by Erick K — 03 Feb 2016
Nevermind the very odd thing of watching a subtitled Donnie Yen movie in an AMC multiplex, maybe the most surprising thing about "Ip Man 3" is how fine an actor Donnie can be when it suits him.
Going to back to one of my personal favorites "In the Line of Duty 4/The Witness" and even more recent works like "SPL" and "Flashpoint," Donnie has never been the most subtle actor, but in the "Ip Man" trilogy, he can do some damn fine ACK-ting, whether it's selling barely contained rage or genuine filial love.
Oh and Yuen Woo-ping directs the action. If you only know him as the "Crouching Tiger" and "Matrix" guy, the movie more than lives up to his resume; if you know him as the man who along with Corey Yuen defined the look and feel of 90's Hong Kong wirework and wire "assisted" fight action, one of the duo who did for the international reputation of HK kung-fu movies of that time that Lau Kar-leung and Chang Cheh did in the 70's, then this is the kind of fanservice that only something like "The Force Awakens" or "Creed" can possibly match.
