Review of Ip Man 3 (2015) by Jason C — 29 Apr 2016
MIKE TYSON is in Ip Man 3. I thought he was a great addition to this movie, which struggled a bit to keep a solid story moving along. While I understand that movie-making is different in the East, Ip Man's story didn't transition between crises very well. The story was OK overall, but the fights made this movie worth watching.
You can't really change the lead character, and Donnie Yen brings Ip Man to life, but the actor who portrayed Cheung's kung fu was stronger... literally. The guy was so much more animated and violent until the end, when Yen got better. I kept waiting for Ip Man to take his frustrations out on SOMEONE, but that moment never came.
The fight choreography was good for the most part, after a bit of a slow start. It seemed Yen wasn't able to handle the speed of taking on multiple combatants. When it was more limited fighting, Yen was amazing. The Cheung guy didn't seem to have any limits.
Ip Man 3 isn't a big budget movie with the scenery like Crouching Tiger, so I wouldn't say you need to see it in theaters, but it's definitely worth watching for any Ip Man or kung fu movie fan.
