Review of Ip Man (2008) by Nicholas S — 15 Apr 2011
A great kung fu movie telling a fictionalized story of the master of wing chun kung fu and mentor of bruce lee, ip man. I was very impressed with the cinematography and the fight scenes are some of the best i've seen in recent years.
I liked donnie yen's portrayal of the kung fu master, and was pleased to see one of the actors from the live-action miniseries of great teach onizuka portray the evil japanese general. all in all, the movie was well worth it for its beautiful recreation of those periods in chinese history as well as amazing choreography.
however, the story grew a little stale as the japanese were portrayed stereotypically as brutal and cruel (common for chinese film), and the chinese were portrayed as devoutly nationalistic and immensely moral in their actions.
but sometimes it's nice to know exactly who is good and who is bad.
