Review of Ip Man (2008) by Alex V — 20 Apr 2011
The predictable plot and obvious philosophizing goes virtually unnoticed under the definitive quality of the action sequences and the sheer likeability of the title character. Donnie Yen plays Ip Man; The worlds nicest person. Never-mind that he can pretty much defeat anybody in a fight with minimal effort. But despite this, Ip Man doesn't feel invincible us at all. His facade of quiet, emotional stability, begins to crack when things start getting rough. In one action sequence, Ip Man's rage is made manifest by way of the sheer brutality in which he beats his opponents. By contrast, earlier in the film, he counters a possibly life and death situation by playfully utilizing a feather duster as a weapon. Such a dramatic change in fight dynamic tells volumes about the shifting mind set of the character.
--8.3/10--.
