Review of Ip Man (2008) by Meryl S — 24 Apr 2011
Brilliant movie. The fact that there is no dodgey flying through the air like alot of Kung-Fu movies is this movies greatest assest. The story is very powerful and the fight sceens were brutial.
There was also several moments of comic relief, more so in the first half of the movie, which were a nice touch but didn't ruin the continuity nor the direction of the film. However, the serious overtone in the second half of the film is where this movie goes to another level and packs a heavy punch.
The acting is quality and the dialogue whilst being very difficult to keep up with at times (since I don't speak Mandarin and had to use subtitles) is also very good.
This is easily my favourite movie of the year thus far and also my favourite Kung-Fu film ever made.
There are several sceens in this movie that are solid gold but one particular sceen about an '1 hour 10mins' in (give or take), that is one of the best fight sceens i've ever seen. To the point that it looks real. It was bruital, gory, inspiring and humanising...
