Review of Ip Man (2008) by Trevor R — 08 Jun 2011
My expectations were pretty high after seeing the trailer and hearing my friends praise the film. I wasn't disappointed. Donnie Yen makes it look waaaaay too easy. He takes down opponents with ease and grace, but also with furious anger in some instances.
The story is alright, but somehow reminded me a bit of the Jet Li film Fearless, mostly because of the ending. The martial arts in the film is fantastic. However, I have to disagree with the people that believe this is the best martial arts film of all-time.
While I enjoyed the amazing choreography, it had all the normal martial arts tropes: you see friends of the main character die or get beaten mercilessly and he then takes revenge in the form of beating the living crap out of a bunch of "bad" dudes; then the final battle which in almost every instance ends with the main character beating his opponent.
Ip Man was good, but just ends up being about as good as most of the other martial arts films I've seen.
