Review of Ip Man (2008) by Jesse O — 13 Oct 2011
Goddamn this movie was great. For a martial arts movie, there was surprisingly good character development and legit drama to this movie. It's neither over the top nor goofy, which I have to admit is kind of the charm to some of these movies.
But this movie is definitely a change of pace, and a welcome one at that. Of course the fight scenes are also pretty damn great too, especially the scene where Yip Man fights ten dudes at the Japanese dojo.
That scene was pretty much made the movie worth watching. There's this part in the scene where YIp is fighting four dudes at the same time and it's incredible, I'm not sure if this was ACTUALLY choreographed or if it was really good editing of four individual fights, but it was pretty incredible.
Knowing that most of the plot was fabricated for dramatic purposes sort of hurts it a bit for me, because some people, without doing their research, might believe that a lot of this actually happened.
Despite that, the movie is still really goddamn great and highly recommended.
