Review of Ip Man (2008) by Black R — 04 Dec 2011
Ip Man is the best martial arts movie I've seen so far, showing one of the most entertaining action scenes, to an antagonist portrayed for contempt. From it's story and acting, this couldn't be any more intense with the discouraging downfall of one of the most respected martial arts teacher of his time.
During the break of WWII, Master Ip was becoming well known by his extreme skills of kung fu. But when Japanese forces take over china, most of his town and dream are eradicated. After earning a job for desperate times, a Japanese general comes and gives a deal to the former martial artists. He tells them that if they defeat one of their soldiers, they will earn a bag of rice. But by witnessing two of his friends being shot down and beaten to death, it sets a spark in Ip Man, causing him to fight for what he believes in, his family and country.
Donnie Yen is really talented in portraying Ip Man, and same with the rest of the actors. The movie has a welcoming beginning, giving a friendly surrounding, which makes you wonder what the movie is really about. But surprisingly when Japan enters, it turns over as bleak, but just as entertaining. Ip Man forces its severe compassion deep inside, which makes you shout and cheer for its victorious ending.
