Review of Ip Man (2008) by John S — 06 Jul 2012
It may not be historically accurate (hence it being a "semi-biographical" film) but it is an absolute perfect blend of unbelievably exciting and impressive fight scenes and a touching heartfelt story.
The grit and intensity of the film is awe-inspiring and Donnie Yen's stellar performance is quite admirable. What I really love about the film is how the fight scenes are almost a literary device and they complement the story, instead of it being the other way around.
There have been numerous films to do this, but Ip Man has no gimmicks, it's raw and real. With some of the greatest fight scenes captured on film and also one of the most inspiring stories, Ip Man is definitely one of the greatest kung fu movies in recent history.
