Review of Ip Man (2008) by Eric S — 05 Aug 2012
A grand dedication to the legend, man and art. Ip Man details the basics of the life of Ip Man and while not entirely accurate, showcases some of the best grounded fighting choreography since Bruce Lee.
Ip Man is a Kung Fu Master, he dominates all other masters with his WIng Chun, a realistic, quick art consisting of short quick movements. When the Japanese occupy China, Ip Man is forced into a life of poverty, years later he discovers an underground fighting arena where Chinese men must fight for a mere bag of rice.
After a tragic even unfolds Ip Man must not just avenge his friend and country men, defeating the Japanese general. but must also care for his family. The acting is solid and Donnie Yen is perfect as Ip Man, humble yet strong, feisty and kind.
He even looks like the man, demonstrating a intrinsic quality to the role. Overall this is a beaut of a film from our eastern friends at Cine Asia. Ip Man is most known as the teacher of Bruce Lee. This argues not just for the accomplishments of Ip Man, but the man himself.
Great script, albeit subtitled and great artistic direction. Xie xie Ip Man!
