Review of Ip Man (2008) by Tony M — 29 Aug 2012
A major fan of martial arts movies, I had yet to really find one that kind of defined the genre. You can go back to the greats, Enter the Dragon, Ong Bak, Legend of the Drunken Master, and so on and enjoy those movies with great abandon, yet, perhaps like me, find something missing in all those films.
I believe I've found the missing ingredient in IP man: truly believable characters in real, gut-wrenching situations. It also doesn't hurt to have film veteran Donnie Yen, here at his bone-crunching best.
One may argue that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon does it better, but I offer this argument; this film features no tree hopping, roof jumping or flying, but instead fight sequences that make the pulse pound by offering characters who are never really sure how the fights will end up, and because of that, neither or we.
The fight sequences are directed by the great Sammo Hung, as well, and feature some of the best you've ever seen. If you like martial arts movies, by all means, IP man is a must see.
