"Ip Man" is somewhat of a rarity in its genre because the film actually attempts to tap into the condition of its own characters rather than focusing specifically on the action sequences that it has to offer. Wilson Yip and Edmond Wong's unique formula pay off well, resulting in a film that packs as much intensity as any conventional martial arts film, while simultaneously bringing character development, and well formulated plot into the mix.

During the Japanese occupation of China during World War II, a martial arts master who was considered the best in the land loses his ability to teach, and he is forced to live in a world of poverty and despair with his family. He begins to realize that he must fight back and take on an evil Japanese military general in order to regain his honor. There are several other plot elements in this film, but overall that's the basic summary.

The uniqueness doesn't quite come in the overall summary of the plot. Yip manages to incorporate little instances throughout the film which make you question if your watching a martial arts film or a drama. This was astonishing, and at the same time very appealing. There are little moments where the audience is reminded that they are watching not only a great action film, but a study of humanity as well. This is also thanks to the well-done acting by Donnie Yen and others.

As you would expect, the action sequences are fantastic. The well choreographed stunts mix in perfectly with the well done cinematography. The grained color correction gives the film a dark and gritty feel to it, and you'll feel immersed in the picture's exhibition of beautiful landscapes and city streets.

"Ip Man" is fun for its refreshing formula, and its overall intensity. They took a risk by attempting to make the audience feel for its characters, and it truly worked well. Not many martial arts films nowadays are able to do what this film managed to do in its 1 hour and 46 minute duration, but "Ip Man" represents the potential for films of this sub-genre to be able to not only pack a punch, but some heart as well.
