Review of Ip Man (2008) by Gavin P — 06 Jan 2014
A very well-made and well-rounded kung-fu epic. But it's not really an "epic" in the sense of 'Hero' or 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' - it focuses solely on Ip Man's struggles to find his place in modern (1930s/40s) China.
It's obviously made all the more believable that most of this probably did happen, and it's good to see Japan recognised as the tormentors they were then. Plenty of expertly-staged fights that never drag.
Can't wait to watch the next two!
