Review of Invincible (2013) by Ryan L — 27 Aug 2012
I am such a big fan of this movie. I can't really explain why. It is not the best sports movie ever made, not even the most popular. However, it does remain to me the finest football movie I've seen to date.
Again I repeat that many people may not agree with me on this one but I really really enjoy this movie. Of Mark Wahlberg's films this could be in my top 3 or 5 along with Boogie Nights, The Departed, and The Fighter.
It is so much fun to watch. The story is unbelievably inspiring. In fact I was surprised when I first saw it, to learn that it was a true story (don't have a huge knowledge of the pre-1980s Eagles unfortunately).
Mark Wahlberg delivers a fine performance. I wouldn't say he had reached his acting peak at this point, and wasn't as sharp as he is in The Fighter, but it is still a very Wahlberg-y performance and solid all around.
Greg Kinnear is what sells it though. He is fantastic in most things and in this he is a shining star with Wahlberg. The gang of misfits that are Papale's friends are my absolute favorite however, and it is the interactions between them and Papale and seeing how their friends success effects each of them that truly speaks to me.
It is a very heartwarming story if not 100% historically accurate (none of these films ever are). I still watch it every couple of months, usually over summer when I miss football. If you haven't seen it I definitely recommend it.
In my opinion my favorite football movie ever made.
