Review of Invictus (2009) by Ignacio R — 02 Apr 2011
"Invictus" doesn`t work. It's a great story, altough you really get tired of Saint Mandela during the show... Sometimes the story is so Hollywood... I won't mention anything about the match itselft nor the politics (nobody says anything about how things have been for South Africa and white boers since then).
"Invictus" doesn't show, for example, the intensity, violence and epic of rugby. Who cares someone could ask? Well, the whole movie it's about a rugby game, and how people followed this team and admired these guys.
As somebody says, it needs a little bit of "Any given Sunday", and maybe Eastwood ain't capable of that with his classic staging. I saw no real emotion in some of the easy Hollywoodesque scenes Carlin wrote in his book and Eastwood perfectly adapted, forgetting those where Mandela is portraited as a real Political animal and strategist made by his terrible years in prison under the white boers.
An epic movie that convinces me not during his epic moments. Freeman and Damon are great in this one, by the way.
