Review of Invictus (2009) by Andrew T — 08 Oct 2011
Directed by Clint Eastwood.
Morgan Freeman stars as Nelson Mandela, recently released from prison and elected as the President of South Africa. He recognizes the 1995 Rugby World Cup, being held in South Africa, as an opportunity to inspire and unite his countrymen. So he summons the captain of the rugby team (Matt Damon) to his office and gives him a pep talk on the importance of winning.
Freeman and Damon both give convincing performances, and their South African accents actually sound authentic! We see several examples of Mandela's inspiring wisdom and his ability to forgive. He shares with the rugby captain his favourite poem, "Invictus", which is Latin for "unconquered".
My only complaint about this movie is that the rugby scenes tend to drag on a bit too long!
