Review of Invictus (2009) by Kim H — 08 Jan 2011
On paper this movie sounds, well terrible (at least in my opinion) Matt Damon in a movie about South African rugby? But luckely enough the names of both Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman made me watch this movie.
At first, the movie seemed boring and very bland. But over time it got better, sure the plot is very plain and predictable if you know what happened at the 1995 Rugby World Cup (like me) but the actors save this movie, all the back up don't really matter much (though most of the South African accents were atrocious and sounded like a bad New Zealand impression, Matt Damon's specifically) but the likes of Morgan Freeman really boosted this movie, I do think Damon's character was very under-used but Mr. Freeman helped shape this movie.
The relationship beetween Freeman and Damon was fantastic, and the feel of the movie was terrific (from the actual scenes showing the team's playing each other in Rugby, to just the soothing scenes of the bulked up Rugby players helping out some of the scrawny, small village children) which is to be expected when Clint Eastwood is behind the camera, sure this isn't as good as Gran Torino but it is still a good movie.
If your a fan of rugby, or a fan of sports in generall you would enjoy this movie. Im a fan of both but this really knocked me out of the park, I was so impressed and I went in not expecting much. This is definately worth a watch for viewers who want a movie that's not too serious, but still is dramatic in it's own way.
