Review of Invictus (2009) by Lee B — 10 Feb 2011
Very, very good.
Although this is a film about overcoming racial prejudice in South Africa, it doesnt smack you round the head with 'racism, racism, racism', its a very subtle film showing the overcoming of said prejudice.
Some cracking scenes of unease as the Black security team meet the White team, the atmosphere so thick with mistrust and almost hatred, brilliantly acted. These sort of scenes are throughout the film that make the journey of the film so worthwhile, eventually turning to trust and respect.
I can see why America and Oscar ignored this film though, its quite Rugby heavy, the last 30 mins being nothing but Rugby (i didnt know what was happening?!).
Just a really good drama, no CGI, no action, no sex scenes, just good story telling.
