Review of Invictus (2009) by Tibor B — 06 Sep 2011
Eastwood can let sentiment get the better of him as a director sometimes and he swims close to the line with this tale of Mandela's involvement with the Springboks rugby team. An obvious choice perhaps, but Freeman does bring an easygoing yet wise character to Mandela, who cannily spots the potential in sporting success to help unite a broken country.
Many sports and biopic boxes are ticked, but it does feel like a lot of the real story has been watered down in favour of a lightweight, inspirational entertainment.
