Review of Invictus (2009) by Dave M — 11 Feb 2013
Eastwood. Your movies are always entertaining. But never aspire to greatness; save for Mystic River. The acting was top notch with Freeman and Damon both giving amazing performances. The look of the film is beautiful thanks to Eastwood's consistent collaboration with DP Tom Stern.
It's a very light hearted film. Your typical underdog sports film, but with a political message. My problem was that I never felt too emotionally involved with the rugby team, or strangely, Mandela's security team.
And Mandela alone wasn't enough to carry my emotions. The other big issue I had with the film was the music. What should have been nothing but a South African themed score, Eastwood felt necessary to include "songs" that grabbed me by the jaw and shoved spoonfuls of wet nasty sap down my throat.
It was out of place and completely removed me from the film. I smell old man doings abound. Still, it's a well produced picture that'll have the crinkled old farts of the Academy whizzing in their adult diapers.
