Review of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) by Kayla K — 17 Nov 2008
Left to my own devices this weekend, I dusted off a dvd to watch, and came up with the 1978 Invasion Of the Body Snatchers. Not really a film that springs to mind freely, and it suffers from the dreaded term 're-make'.
This is unfair, as this is not a re-make but, as they like to say now, a 're-imagining'. The core concept remains the same as the classic original, but the director skillfully weaves in those 1970 themes of alienation, conspiracy, psychoanalysis, and urban life.
The air of menace that pervades the film is fantastic, every scene as claustrophobic as the last; you need to watch the film more than once to catch everything going on in the background, which you may miss first time round.
Acting is excellent, with a fine performance from Donald Sutherland, and decent support from Leonard Nimoy and a young (and very slightly hammy) Jeff Goldblum.
The ending is also quite shocking.....
Worth watching on dvd because you can also enjoy the directors commentary, which has some nice titbits.
A highpoint of 1970's cinema.
