Review of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) by Aidan H — 12 Dec 2009
A recent viewing of this movie had me wondering why I'd recommended it to people all these years. Unkempt editing, bizarre and intrusive music, bad Method acting and impaired and mumbled sound and dialogue had me fumbling for the remote throughout.
Some creepy lighting aside, the sense of horror I felt on first watching this was entirely absent due, partly, to its over-reliance on shots of people running and walking about (I entirely empathised with the two main characters who spend the last third of the movie trying to remain awake).
This may have scared the pants of its audiences back in the day but, as The Others so accurately illustrated, these films are just zombie movies without make-up. One point for a hilarious, off-kilter performance from Goldblum who seemed to be building on his luna-tics for later roles.
