Review of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) by Solomon F — 17 Jan 2010
Corny and gross, yet strangely mesmerizing. Doesn't quite have the impact of the original, but the themes of paranoia remain consistently creepy throughout. For better or worse, it's hard to sympathize with these helpless--and rather witless--characters, especially when their sad end is predictable from the beginning.
Of course, this is indelibly a B-movie, so don't expect good acting. Donald Sutherland cracks a few jokes every once in a while, but retains a blandly petrified expression for most of the film. Brooke Adams is more emotive, yet not very memorable.
Goldblum is his usual and Nimoy is a nice surprise. All in all, aside from some disgustingly decent (but sparse) special effects and a few intense moments of human-against-pod struggle, this film is merely passable entertainment.
