Review of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) by Jordan S — 27 Mar 2011
One of those films that belongs to a very short list of movies that is both a remake and a really good movie. While I love the B-movie with a brain vibe of the 50's original and even enjoyed the studio excesses of the contemporary take with Nicole Kidman "The Invasion", this is still my favorite take on the tale.
The way the paranoia and the exhaustion is executed in this version works well without making the film feel as if it is tiring of the premise as well (my biggest complaint about the most recent version of the story) and its fun to see strong actors like Sutherland, a very young Goldblum, Nimoy, and Veronica Cartwright adding gravitas to what at first glance seems to be a silly premise.
The look of the film is very 70's with a color scheme that almost evokes Italian horror at moments, and it causes the film to have an undeniably unique feel. The social commentary seems absent at first but as the film continues it becomes extremely present, which I was glad to see.
A great spin on a classic story, and proof that remakes can be a good idea if you take a fresh and original direction with them (which is FAR too rare).
