Review of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) by Robert I — 12 Jan 2013
The 1st of three remakes and in my view the one which matches the original.
The main reason the film works so well is director Phillip Kaufmans paranoid take on the story.
Whereas in the original it was a play on the fear of communism this one is a post Watergate critique on the state of America at the end of the 70s.
Kaufmans cast are all first rate and Donald Sutherland is very very good as the leader of a band of uncloned beings who maintain their struggle to stay awake and get to the bottom of what is happening to people around them.
What makes the film so powerful is the creepiness that runs through it ,from Robert Duvall on a park swing ,to loads of dustcarrts seemingly picking up remains ,and of course the actions of those who have been cloned ,Kaufman never lets up with the creepy paranoia and excellent cinema technique.
One of the best Sc fi films of the 70s and certainly one which gets you thinking long afterwards.
