Review of Intolerable Cruelty (2003) by Andrew U — 27 Feb 2008
A fun comedy with two excellent performances. Clooney is Cary Grant for the 2000s, and Catherine Zeta-Jones looks amazing and is excellent as the gold-digger Clooney falls for. Intolerable Cruelty tries to evoke classic Hollywood screwball comedies and it is an entertaining film, but some moments feel out of place and the PG-13 keeps it from feeling as charming and the sexual jokes feel to explicit compared to the classics it wants us to associate it with.
I felt this was a strange choice for the Coen brothers, mainly because they are so great at creating inventive and engaging visuals, but this film looks (for the most part) like a typical romantic comedy.
A fun little film, but not the Coen's best.
