Review of Intolerable Cruelty (2003) by Bastet 0 — 28 Jun 2010
This movie is a great rom-com for the cynical bastard in a lot of us. And I don't mean it will melt your heart- both characters (Clooney and Zeta-Jones) are truly despicable which helps you root for them- they truly were meant to be. The description Flixter has of Clooney being womanizing is not true- if anything, he is a barrucuda/leech that will win at all costs in a trial- he is a slime ball, but not a womanizer.
If you like typical Coen fare, I cannot see this being awesome to you but not a let down either. It's hard to pinpoint because the dialogue always keeps you on your toes, there's very absurd scenes that almost come across as dreams (e.g. when Massey is in his bosses' presence) and Clooney and Zeta-Jones' chemistry is very strong.
Make no mistake though- underneath all the plotting and venom- this really is a love story.
