Review of Intolerable Cruelty (2003) by Martin A — 15 Aug 2013
After the Coen Bros. struck gold with the dark comedy masterpiece, The Big Lebowski and their first affiliation with George Clooney in O Brother, Where Art Thou? and reaching a very big cult following in the process, theyb made a very different movie named Intolerable Cruelty. I'll give you the review, spoiler free.
I'm under the impression that George Clooney can't give a bad performance. That being said, he's the best part of the movie. Catherine Zeta-Jones gives surprisingly good performance and it just makes you wonder why she couldn't stay this good looking now. The banter between characters is always fun in a Coen Bros. movie and it's no different here. My particular favorite scene was Clooney's character and Herrmann's character go out of the restaurant.
Onto the negatives. It's nowhere near as good as other movies by the Bros. but at least they tried. But, I think they tried it a little too hard to be different. It's way more of silly rom-com than a dark comedy. I don't think the movie is too memorable either.
The story revolves around unfaithful relationships and cheating, but making fun of itself that, plus busting people's ass(they say that a lot in the movie). Zeta-Jones and Clooney fall in love after Clooney has to solve her cover her case.
The point is, if the Coen Bros. or the great cast weren't involved with this movie, it would fall apart. It is an enjoyable movie, though and gives you enough to satisfy. I'll give it a 6/10. It's enjoyable if you get past the cliches and just try to have a good time.
