Review of Into the Woods (2014) by Ryan R — 27 May 2015
A genuinely tortuous experience to watch. Big performers like Meryl Streep reduced to playing opposite the self-styled 'fat is funny' James Corden in a film so hollow you can practically see the set pieces wobble.
Not a single tune that sticks with you. Most of them rely on mish-mash simplistic rhyming, or ending each line with 'good' or 'the woods.' I failed to feel invested in any of the characters or the story, which meandered from scene to scene with no direction or intent.
Constant moral contradictions, flat lines, songs that made the ears bleed and a cast that is slowly whittled down (but not quick enough) made this bizarre attempt at bringing the stage to the small screen something to endure, not enjoy.
Burn it with fire.
