Review of Into the Woods (2014) by Rasmus M — 02 Apr 2016
Into the Woods does not reach to the list of Disney's best live-action films, but definitely has it's good moments. Though actual highlights are conspicuous by their absence in both singing and acting, excluding the one and only Meryl Streep in the role of a witch. Still, rest of the cast manage to pull off their roles at least decently.
Psychologically deeper dive into the black and white world of old fairy tales is indeed interesting, but might feel bizarre for majority of the audience. Good thing that excluding few short monologs, it's mostly done by singing, which keeps even that entertaining.
The biggest strength of the film is definitely imaginative and sometimes also dark humor that finds it's way also to the songs. Still, I think that good musical would require at least one or two songs that really stick out. What really disappoints me personally, is the role of Johnny Depp which has been hyped in advance, and then turns out to be just well performed, but only a few minute short appearance to attract the audience.
