Review of Into the Woods (2014) by Karen R — 30 Jul 2015
Great performances by a surprisingly musical cast. Some of the brief musical numbers peppered throughout the play that have been replaced by quick dialogue or background score were necessary for the sake of pacing, but they're definitely missed by a diehard fan.
Depp should have looked more like a wolf and comes off more like a cannibal that a beast. And the use of auto tune is not overdone but so unnecessary when used. But overall, the right cast was chosen and the film, though abridged and slightly altered, is a faithful adaptation of one of one of my favorite musicals.
Sondheim's music and lyrics alone make the film grand.
