Review of Into the Woods (2014) by Taylor K — 02 Apr 2015
If you're looking for a film that is faithful to the original Grimm fairy tale stories, then look no further than Disney's Broadway film adaptation of "Into the Woods".
This musical incorporates Little Red Ridding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Bean Stock, and has them interact with a Baker and his Wife who is trying really hard to conceive a child of their own of being unable to reproduce.
The music is enchanting and it brings some great moral lessons to the audience about some heavy topics such as adultery, familial bonds, romance, and betrayal.
I couldn't have chosen a better cast then Disney had for this film, Johnny Depp makes his musical reprisal since his film, "Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street" and the young boy from Les Miserables makes his own appearance as Jack this time around who discovers the beauty and terror of Giants in the Sky.
Chris Pine was enjoyable as Cinderella's Prince and admittedly he has the greatest scene in this entire film which is his performance with Rapunzel's Prince as they sing about "Agony" together. Somehow though, Chris Pine manages to get more and more William Shatner with each performance he does. (But in a good way).
The costumes and the locations in this film were enchanting and the cinematography was absolutely gorgeous. Just the opening all on it's own will give you chills from how beautiful it's shot.
I highly recommend this film for anyone who is looking for a new timeless classic to add in their movie collection and anyone who is heavily into the performance arts because there is a lot going for this film that you will enjoy.
