Review of Into the Woods (1991) by Beth S — 01 Aug 2008
This cast is fantastic, and, while I wish I'd seen it onstage first, the entire production is very good. Wonderful blend of humor and pathos. Teaches poignant lessons about society; a coming-of-age story for every single character.
While the somewhat depressing endings aren't necessarily in sync with the original tales (as the heroes are always 'good', or they're not heroes), the musical does a great job utilizing details from some of the oldest versions of the tales--instead of what has become pop culture.
(The notable example being the tale of Little Red Ridinghood, who does in fact die).
