Review of Into the Wild (2007) by Hollycc — 05 Mar 2008
Lovely film, given most people know how it ends. I was thinking it was going to be sappy from the get-go--but it wasn't---only towards the end, when the inevitable starts to creep in. Emile Hersh was excellent--as was Hal Holbrook. Their scenes together were some of the most heart wrenching moments in film I've seen in awhile.
I admire how Penn directed this film--both in landscape and feeling regarding the main character. Bittersweet is possibly the best adjective for it. You both want to knock some sense into him and cheer him on--and you're left feeling the loss of his life at the end. Very good movie.
