Review of Into the Wild (2007) by Clint A — 28 Jun 2012
Sean Penn tries admirably to bring Jon Krakauer's book of the same name to the big screen. In his attempt he is successful in part. But after watching the movie your left with a sense of "Well was that really necessary".
The book looks deeper at society's point of view of the ill fated Chris McCandless, something which Penn purposefully neglects. In doing so he creates an antihero who stuck it to the world and died in his element.
The audience weeps. They cheer. It is a fitting end. They leave unaware of the aftermath Krakauer tries so hard to debate in his book. As a film awesome, as an adaptation, its another film that suffers the trap of selling out.
