Review of Into the Wild (2007) by Jordan R — 04 Dec 2012
One of the best films I've seen in years... maybe even this entire decade. It might not be perfect, but its slightly bloated length and meandering style only add to the movie's charms. Into the Wild's a deeply moving film that stays with you for hours after the final scenes, leaving with you sadness and hope.
Beautifully shot and acted with the kind of precision that most indie films only think they're achieving. Between this and the Pledge, Sean Penn has turned a corner as a director and proven himself to be a visionary filmmaker.
Hal Holbrook's remarkable turn SCREAMS Oscar nomination. Emile Hirsch pulls off the tricky combo of making you care about his character while remaining almost entirely enigmatic in his choices. And Eddie Vedder shows once again that he might be even better without Pearl Jam.
